This is mostly from my experience with the 7th Sea background system. If the characters wrap up an element of the setting, they should get a boost out of it. Probably one step above the Critical level, so around 3x or 4x. That element is then taken off the list.

Obviously, this doesn't work for all elements. But, it can represent something like finally clearing out the Dungeon of Doom. Or removing Magister Felris from power. Or Mike coming to terms with the Order of Blades. It is the process of closing a chapter in the characters' lives.

I'm also contemplating crossing this with the 5x5 system.Lughhttp://divisionnihil.blogspot.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1678761812929125529.post-62725328180688927752011-10-24T15:13:46.913-04:002011-10-24T15:13:46.913-04:00@Dave Introducing new stuff can mostly be curtaile...@Dave Introducing new stuff can mostly be curtailed by the GM not making it a thing, but that reveals an important throttle - if you want players to create more stuff, then make their stuff rewardable more often.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14216103531396452644noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1678761812929125529.post-39735001422188120372011-10-23T11:35:32.975-04:002011-10-23T11:35:32.975-04:00I'm unclear on something. In the "Long List" section you suggest that dropping an element to level 1 once it's been explored and letting it level back up over time will encourage players to interact with a smaller list of elements. Wouldn't that instead encourage them to introduce more elements and get the full XP reward rather than "wasting" time on the now-first-level element? It seems this would lengthen the list, not shorten it. What am I missing?Davehttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15492294499781518531noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1678761812929125529.post-12230337019638082542011-10-06T15:11:33.585-04:002011-10-06T15:11:33.585-04:00Honestly, I wouldn't suggest against having so...Honestly, I wouldn't suggest against having some form of "personal" XP machine here. I would if that was given equal weight to adventure/group XP, because then it doesn't encouraging collaborative awesome. But having a minor XP element -- a small-but-tangible reward just for you if you, say, help the dead find peace -- is a good way to say "here's a place where my story is different from yours, even though we're intertwined."

If the group benefited from that action, I think it would have less meaning. It becomes "ours" rather than "yours" and it puts pressure to do things that are "about you" for everyone else.

But again, I wouldn't rate them the same. To use 4/e currency, doing something like that might rate 10XP*level once a scene. Not much, but enough to matter over time and to push agenda.

- RyanRyan Macklinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00067447290232763272noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1678761812929125529.post-57784160950069794842011-10-05T16:33:40.907-04:002011-10-05T16:33:40.907-04:00Good idea and right in time.
